I found out yesterday was not Presidents Day. Neither was it President’s Day, nor Presidents’ Day. It was the Federal Holiday of Washington’s Birthday.
I know you think - We used to have Lincoln’s Birthday and Washington’s birthday and now they have been mushed together in one holiday. Not so. Depending upon what state you reside in different Presidents birthdays are observed in February. There is only one President’s birthday honored by the Federal government and that is Washington’s. As seen here. Also his actual birthday was on February 22, in case you wanted to know.
I happen to live in California. The schools here also get Lincoln’s Birthday off. Though most non-teachers/ non-students do not appear to. So at least in California we have a Federal holiday and a State Holiday. Two Presidents, two holidays, two political bodies, no mushing. In case you wondered it is celebrated on Feb 12th, his actual birthday. *Gasp*
For us Californians, we also legally honor Cesar Chavez with his own day. Most people I know do not have this off but I guess someone does. Cesar Chavez was a labor and civil rights advocate. Ironically, Cesar Chavez was born in Arizona where Cesar Chavez Day is not a state holiday. Nice.
