Just Friends

There are more than a couple songs by this name. Most of them are awful. There is even a horrible movie that I refuse to watch. They don’t even use the song in the soundtrack. Its liek remaking Alfie and not using the song Alfie which was by the way the only good part of the original movie BTW. Well it did have Michael Caine in it which is pretty good.

Anyway here is an old scratchy version of Just Friends played by Charlie Parker on the album Bird with Strings 1951. Here is the closest thing I could find on Amazon if you like the track I have posted. The version on Master Takes is much more cleaned up and more melodic, but very nice. I think Charlie wrote this but really no idea.

Maybe you like, iTunes here is Just Friends in that form since some people say the album is dead.

The incomparable Sarah Vaughan sings a version that has some great and melancholy lyrics. Again not sure who wrote the lyrics or if they were tacked on to an existing melody. Billie and Sinatra have covered the song and those version are pretty listenable. I don’t like the Dino version but I like him otherwise.

We loved we laughed we cried/
Then suddenly love died/
The story ends/
And we’re/
Just friends/

Not thinking of anyone in particular but the song feels how I feel right now - kinda mopey.
