Comments: You Decide

I think the 3rd and 7th ones down on your “other side” list make you non-conservative.  The ones on your conservative list don’t strike me as being uniquely conservative qualities (eg. having short hair, liking James Bond movies.) except for the Arnold thing.  Also.  I don’t get why stripping is conservative.  Maybe that’s an american joke I don’t get.

Stripping is regarded as perpetuating a sexist condition and therefore not politically correct. Being politically correct is, I think, a very liberal value.

It’s easier to call oneself conservative...There are not as many proscriptions on behaviour.  Conservatism tends to be a bigger tent as far as ideology goes.

I know a few of my conservative beliefs actually send “liberals” into convulsions, whereas conservatives tend to tolerate my more liberal beliefs.

Also,
Since I’ve...erm...converted, I have discovered that those of a leftish persuasion are less likely to take on board any factual arguments that may challenge their worldview.  I usually end up getting shouted down when I enter into discussion.

On the other hand, prior to my conversion, I found that many people who may have held opposing views to mine (i.e. more rightish) tended to be unafraid of inconvenient truths.

This is an excellent point. In my own experience liberals and conservatives both have the opportunity to be understanding of views differeing from their own. When persons don’t is never any fun.

I would agree though that tolerance is the hallmark of an keen mind regardless of their right or left orientation.

There was a great National Review article in this issue about “Crunchy Conservatism.”

I believe in being easy on the environment, but I do not believe in elevating animals above people.

I am a vegeterian, but I do not force this on others.

My husband and I generally buy fuel-efficient used cars.

I believe that homelessness, poverty, and other social ills are important problems that deserve our attention...but I believe that the solution lies with community organizations and concerned individuals, not the government.

I volunteer approximately 50 hours a month, so I put my time where my mouth is.

I believe the military is essential to national defense.

I believe that although fashion may be relative, some truths are universal.

I believe that “bad luck,” “institutional racism,” and “sexism” are real--but I still think even the most unlucky and the most oppressed can usually make something of their lives in a free, capitalist society.

Ultimately, I believe in personal responsibility and small government.

That does not mean I always vote Republican, but it does make me a conservative.
